21st February is the International Mother Language Day and in Bangladesh, the day is observed as National Martyr's day since 1952. The day is marked with the martyrdom of valiant sons of Bangladesh for establishing Bangla as the state language of the then East Pakistan (present Bangladesh). This is one and only sacrifice of lives for the sake of the Mother Language in the history of mankind. On this significance of the day, UNESCO declared 21st February as the International Mother Language Day to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. To observe the day, the people of the world in a barefoot walk to the Martyrs' Memorials to pay homage to the martyrs with flowers wearing traditional dress and singing songs. We spared bloods for mother tongue:
The architect of independent Bangladesh, the father of the Bengali nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all his family members were killed on August 15, 1975 by a group of reckless army officers and soldiers. All of Bangabandhu's family were brutally murdered on that day, except for the present Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehena. The killers did not release the ten-year-old child Rasel. The government of the successive power grabbers tried to distort the history of Bangladesh. Finally the present Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina restored the history of Bangladesh after forming the government, and declared 15th August as the National Mourning Day of Bangladesh. Since 2008, the entire Bengali nation observes 15th August as National Day of Mourning. On this day we have discussion meetings, and all kinds of rituals according to Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian religions are held all over the country.
